Melanie Rodriguez - Reflection 1
Group 1
Group 1 was the first to present the first project of the class. They were the ones to set the bar for the rest of the class. They set an example. This must’ve been extremely nerve racking for them, considering they had nothing to base themselves on. From that alone, they did an amazing job. Considering this was the first presentation, I can’t judge too harshly. My only critique would be that group 1, as well as the rest of the class, presented while mostly looking down at a sheet of paper or tablet. I would encourage more engagement with the audience and memorization on the topic to avoid looking down and presenting to a piece of paper. Other than that, I am very proud of group 1 for being confident enough to be the first ones to present and for setting the expectations for the class.
Group 2
I was a part of group 2, and I can say I am very relieved that we did good on our first presentation. Since my group went second, we were a little less nervous, considering we saw group 1 presenting and had something to base ourselves on. We were able to compare and correct things on our end before presenting to the class. This helped us tremendously. We were all very nervous to present especially the day of the presentation because unfortunately one of our group members couldn’t make it due to personal health issues. However, this was quickly resolved by our amazing class lead, Fernando, who stepped up and took his place to make sure we had a smooth presentation. I am so proud of my team for working together to make our first speech as smooth as possible. I am especially proud of our group member, Joshua, who went out of his way after he recovered to make sure he presented his part of the speech in class. His confidence and audience engagement during his speech was above and beyond. I do think the rest of my group could’ve memorized their part better to ensure there was audience engagement, however, I am still incredibly proud of everyone’s hard work. *tears of joy*
Groups 3 and 4
Due to a few additional presentations about school resources, groups 3 and 4 had even more additional time to prepare for their first presentations. Because of this, the organization and memorization of their speech was heavily improved prior to presenting their speech. However, I still noticed many of my classmates looking down and not engaging with the audience during their speech. This caused lack of interest from half the class because there was no interaction to keep the audience interested. Since it was the first presentation of the semester, it is expected to be really nervous prior to a speech. I am still very proud of my classmates for stepping out of their comfort zone to present in front of the class for the very first time.
Over all, my main critique is that a lot of my classmates were mainly looking down during their entire speech, lacking in audience engagement. I am eternally grateful to have broken the ice with my class and presenting our first speech assignment together. I look forward to making improvements in my own group, as well as seeing everyone else’s improvement in the next group presentation.
A special thanks to Professor Sherri Sinkoff for encouraging confidence and comfort to the class when presenting our assignments.
